| State of the Uberworld So 7 weeks ago, this forum came to life with the purpose of creating a community built mmo games. The response was pretty overwhelming, and you just have to browse through the talent sign up thread to see how many skilled and talented people are willing to put forth their time into making this a reality.
While we're still a fair way off from achieving our goals, the amount of progress that has been made in the past 7 weeks is pretty amazing. I actually had to double check the dates to see that we've only been working on our first project for such a short amount of time.
Unfortunately, things haven't been all smooth sailing. It's certainly been an eye opening experience to learn all the things that are required to making an MMO come to life, and we're just scratching the surface of what we need to know.
Project 1, code named Newbie World, has been progressing nicely. It has 2 main purposes. Firstly, as a skill building exercise. Letting people get a hands on feel for designing and implementing content, quests, skills, and just about everything thats needed in an mmo. Secondly, it's a chance for us to develop out procedures and systems that allow for people to efficiently contribute to the project. This part can certainly use a lot of work, though we are making progress.
I'm sure there's a ton of frustration from people who have offered to help out, but haven't been given a clear idea on how. For that, I apologize, and just want you all to know that we are working on ways to make it easier for you all to join in. Keep in mind if you have the time and inclination to jump in, then feel free to do so. Most of the day to day communication happens in IRC, so that is the best place to start.
I understand that most people have limited time and thus prefer to have a clearer idea on what they can do to help, and have the choice on what they decide to do based on how much time they can commit. Tasks such as make this model, implement these vendors, write this quest, are examples of how I want things setup so that anyway can pick and choose tasks that match their preference and time.
So, where are we going from here? Newbie World is going to keep going. 3 of the planned 5 zones have been implemented, and designs are underway for the last 2. Project 2 is in its early early early stage and will hopefully commence with a lot more organization behind it then Newbie World had. I also hope to provide regular updates like this one to let everyone know how things are going, but there's a good chance I'll be far too lazy, err busy to do so, but I will try! |
