Depends on your character and point distribution (which speeds up some training skills). If you want within a few days your first cruiser will be enough to tack or ecw on the front lines. Most pilots start off in inty's or tank boats. I recommend Inty's as the speed will give you enough leeway to escape mistakes and learn how to target select / assist. It's akin to how WoW started you off with the primary spells, then as you leveled the game built on the basic concepts. The two in EvE are tanking or avoiding. Learning to avoid will benifit you more in the long term.
In general however, shield tankers are gimped as all ECW and pvp gear also takes up med. slots.
