There are a lot of non-goons who find them amusing but I think 'respect' is a little hard to find. What Privateers do that some people enjoy is marginally disrupt Empire for some carebears, who tend to be disliked by a lot of low/nosec types. However it goes without question that Privateers are in general spineless. They steer well clear of low/nosec because they don't get to pick their targets out there, they don't get to run around with obvious alt spies, and if they attacked someone at a gate who wasn't wardecced they might actually have to deal with sentry fire. Instead they prey on the weak in Empire and typically steer clear of a challenging circumstance of any kind.
Amusing I guess if you consider that it either takes someone aggressively going after them with a significantly inferior force or a complete retard to lose a ship to them, and this sort of Darwinism goes over well with the EVE community (even non-goons!!!klsoasdkl) but most 0.0 types tend to think they're a bunch of pussies whether they find them amusing or not.
