I just started a trial account a few days ago and I'm enjoying the game so far, but I just don't see how I'll ever be able to compete in the high end PvP, the most appealing aspect of the game for me. I mean that right now i'm at about 800k SP, the starting amount, but if everyone else is gaining new SPs just as fast if not faster than me how will I ever be able to catch up? Once i get 5m SP the high end players will have 20m, once i get 20m they will have 40m, etc. It seems pointless to start now, please tell me I'm wrong.
You won't ever catch up, that's not how the game works. However, once you max or near-max your capabilities to fly a particular ship, that's really it, you don't get much better.

People with 40-60M SP are simply capable of flying a lot more than things with that character than you can, they're not necessarily any better in combat than a 10M SP person. That said, there are a LOT of dependent support skills, and having them maxed out takes a good number of SP. To have a truly top-end character will take you at least a year, it's not like other MMOGs where you max out in a month.

But you can be at 80-90% effectiveness within a couple of months, and at that point, situations and tactics do become more important than SP. So what I'm trying to say here is it's not really a situation where you are permanently screwed and will never be as good as older players, _however_, it will take a significant time investment.

That said, it's pretty fast and easy to become maxed out to fly smaller ships like Interceptors and such, and they are, imo, the most fun ship classes in the game and always desired in gangs. Covops too.
