Most likely because it's almost as good as any weapon/shield combo, and a lot more original. I'm sure it's got particle effects, from the sound of it. I'm doubting Nino runs OOM much other than buffing these days, and if it is going to be a tight situation he can easily whip out that weap/shield combo. Also if almost all the time is spent raiding, I doubt Nino melees even in AA XP groups since they are most likely AA XPing on tougher stuff than most people are at lvl 65.
There is something to be said for originality and variety even in the end game.
