Use fewer towers, I beat easy with 10 towers and no tower past the midpoint of the playfield.
Hint - place cheap 5gold towers to make them go where you want and only upgrade the ones that you need to even late in the game I had 10 towers, and only 7 were upgraded past lvl 1.
