| I'm an old programmer too, though I prefer networks and hardware these days. I definitely get the not liking to adapt part; hell, the transition from C to C++ is what annoyed me to the point where I didn't want to be a programmer anymore. Maybe it was just because I liked to work in ASM so much in college but I've always felt that you're a much better programmer if you know the hardware inside and out too.
I used to hate it when I worked at places like GE where the programmers weren't even allowed to open a case or move a computer 15 feet to a new cubicle/office. Sitting around all day waiting for IT to get around to doing something was beyond irritating, especially since I'm an arrogant bastard who assumes that they don't know anywhere near as much as I do about the computers in the first place. ^^
