Are you talking about heroics or something? I've pugged shadowlabs and some of the tempest keep instances(not alcatraz though) to grind out faction and even though some of the people in the group sucked hardcore we were always able to beat the instance. Might have taken 5 times as long as with the regular crew, but its doable. Heroics on the other hand I'm not even going to try with a pug for a long time to come.

edit: I'll completly agree about the lfg tool, but it's not like that haven't been said a million times.
