After "War of Souls" WotC switched it up and moved away from the one big story arc/minor secondary books and towards a system where this generation of trilogies kind of effects everything, but isn't that big giant book.

Stay far, far away from Amber and Ashes. DL books became a guilty pleasure of mine, I've read 35ish of them. It's not exactly fine literature, but you knew what you were getting. Weis new series however is so horrible that I just can't bring myself to read any new DL books. If you think Nebuchadnezzar was kidding about the sex zombies, that's some of the least corny things you'll read about in it.
