Is there anything else to do other than run missions if you want to do PvP eventually??
yes, PVP.

Join a pirate/anti-pirate corp/alliance in low sec and learn how to kill people. There hundreds of small corp/small alliances out there on both sides of the fence who are more interested in the player's ability and play time than they are in his character's SP. Many of them will supply frigates and basic mods to outfit them for their pilots as well, so the lack of grinding ISK shouldn't be that large of a concern. This isn't a jab at you specifically or anything, but alot of players coming from other mmo's are so set in the "level up first then start doing what you want to do" mindset. The only "leveling" in the game is skill training which occurs at a set rate and occurs regardless if you are mining, missioning, pvping, or whacking it to hentai. That being said, "only fly what you can afford to replace" is still true, but far too many people take that as you have to mission/mine away bored to tears in empire for months to save up the dough to 'start' pvping, when it should mean you pvp in frigates until you can afford better. PVP ship/skill progression is quite natural just like pve is. Too many people take the bare minimum skill requirements up to PVE Battleships for missioning efficiency so they can earn ISK for "PVP". That's great if you are smart about it, use those funds as a security blanket and then approach PVP as newb again and fly frigates. Too many though jump straight into PVP in their minimally skilled PVE BS's and lose 100m isk everytime they undock.

btw if you want to join a 0.0 pvp corp you're far more likely to get in as a pirate than as someone who carebear missioned in empire for 6 months.
