Between starting with 800k SP and this thread (thanks Celebrindal!), it is not hard at all for newbies to pickup. I never played this game before 4 days ago and so far it has been a lot of fun. I haven't really warped more than 3 jumps out and stopped that once some mission kicked my ass.
Since then, i just concentrate on the learning skills and jetcan mining in my starting system. I guess that isn't much fun, but it is easy money. I either play card games on my other monitor or research stuff about EVE. Planning your training and purchases in EVEMon and Quickfit is addicting.
Overall, the game reminds me a lot of Tradewars from back in the (2400 baud) BBS days. You had limited turns per day, so it was a lot of planning to get the most out of your turns. For long training stints (6+ hours), I have Zelda:TP and FF12 to play. It seems like EVE was a perfect fit for my MMO fix.
Anyway, I never played when the starting SP was low (60k?), but I imagine 800k significantly improves the newbie experience.
