You get a +1 implant to a random attribute you can sell for around 500k ISK or so after doing a very long and very boring series of courier missions. To this day I have no idea why going half afk for two hours was considered a good idea as an introduction for new players to EvE. Anyway, unless my memory deceives me this has nothing to do with the tutorial and you can just skip the thing to get the mission chain directly from the agent.

2. Can anyone explain the different ways to buy and sell stuff? The tutorial only really explains how to buy/sell to the Empire. I kept getting the feeling that if I only knew how to use the Player Market (or whatever there is) I could be getting more money/cheaper items.

I could write paragraphs on this. The most basic thing that confuses players is that you want to buy things by browsing by system location and right click->buy now to order the item. Anything else could have you buying stuff 7 jumps away or placing buy orders, which is a sort of escrow IOU promise on future delivery of goods. Your best bet for specific questions would be the newbie channel or searching the eve forums (
http://www.eve-search.com/). Or just drop by the FoH channel and pester me when I'm logged on.
