Oh, and the sandbox nature of the game seems to be a huge deterant for a lot of people. There is no real end game to aim for. You really need to make your own goals and set about achieving them. Of course it takes bit of knowledge and experience to know what goals you can set and how to go about achieving them.

This is why soloing it still very much an option. There's plenty of stuff you can do solo if that's what you want to do. You will not be able to capture systems and hold them solo though. Most of the exciting stuff you hear about is done at the alliance level, which are groups of corpse (guilds) working together.
