early in the game you can solo np... most npc ratting period is done solo or maybe duo, you can mine solo or do missions solo... if you wanna get into the pvp and 0.0 then you need a corp... but its entirely possible and prolly even normal to train up your first million - 2 million sp without grouping up much.
