Well, yes and no. The framework for corps or just friend contacts is far looser than it is in other games in that you don't need X people doing Y for some set period of days to accomplish something. It depends what you're looking for. You can contract out work to mining corps as a pvp gank team in need of equipment, or hire merc corps to protect your production facilities. You need friends, if only because your enemies in EvE will have very long memories. Not to mention the effect specialization has in all aspects of the game.
But yeah, you won't accomplish anything notable as a one-man operation. There are a few celebrity solo pirates, but they are a rarity.
Wodin edit: The game soloable in that at no point do you have to group to "succeed." You can carve out a niche for yourself. It's just that you won't succeed at anything other than farming ISK and leeching patronage from one larger corp or another. If you want to actually
do something you need support.
