| I hate the 'only Martin is badass' crowd. Why do we have to support one author at the expense of all the others? Martin is probably the fantasy writer of the decade but he isn't the only one doing great stuff, nor is his stuff great because of the violence. Its characterization, mythology, and guess what? His ability to hide the fact that the story is still basically the boy king who doesn't know his parents, are what rock. His prose could actually be better, truth be told.
Erikson, Hobb, and Bujold (her fantasy novels) are all as good as Martin. I've heard good things about Sanderson and Bakker as well but haven't read them yet. Go have fun.
