There's plenty of stuff going round if you look for it. For example the "Prince of Nothing" books by R. Scott Bakker have been a good read recently. Not up there with Martin (who really is?), but defenitly a not-for-children fantasy series.

Gore, sex & violence the Martin style isn't really more mature than Harry Potter IMO. It's just a different sort of escapism literature.
