Not all that surprising... the board has a lot of young adults which tend to not be affiliated with either political party or particular view. Maybe one reason youth voter turn out is that low - not only in the US though.

) everyone can form their own reasoned opinion. Higher education usually leads to a more liberal view. If you've really studied evolution, you won't support teaching intelligent design. If you understand how the weather works, you'll just shake your head when someone claims global warming isn't real.
Conservative candidates tend to go more for the value voters as well - going for emotions works and distracts from real issues. Case in point: remember the immigration debate? If I recall correctly, the news media moved on to cover an amendement to ban flag burning and of course gay marriage.
