This is a project that is being developed at
http://www.swgemu.com. They are recreating swg to what it use to be at publish 13 with pre-cu combat. They just went open source.
So far they got chat working, tells, planets, movement, seeing other players
movement, GM commands like warping, and i hear items too. Its open source, so if you wanna play it check out the website for instructions. Its not that hard to connect to a server, if you need help just ask.
Here is the FAQ for the project.
Quote:
Q) When's the next update/release?
A) Shouldn't it be when we feel like it? We dont owe you anything.
Q) In percentage, how much of the emu is complete?
A) We dont give percentages. But if you read the update forum you will find the most recent updates.
Q) When will feature X be added?
A) We'll tell you when. Dont ask us.
Q) Do you have an IRC Channel?
A) Yes! Do not join if you have the intent to ask a question. Read the FAQ first.
irc://irc.idlemonkeys.net:6667/swg
Q) Who are the developers?
A) Xenozephyr, Ramsey, Berix, Joker, Ultyma
Q) Is the project open source?
A) July 9th we will be open sourcing.
Q) How can I help?
A) The best way you can help is to answer questions on IRC and on the forum. This saves the developers time, which results in more progress Smile. You may also consider helping the DB team, http://www.swgemu-datapack.com
Q) Can I PM, IM, or have any form of contact with a developer to ask a question?
A) No. Post it in the Support Forum. And before you do post, please know that if its controlled by the server, we can fix it.
Q) Do you plan on hosting a server? Is that in your plans anywhere, or are you only interested in producing the emu?
A) It's possible we might host a server, but right now we're just developing.
Q) I don't have the client, where can I obtain it?
A) You must buy the client at the store. Anyone will do (even if its on the latest publish). We will provide a patch to getting the client to the right point.
Q) Isnt this illegal?
A) No.
That applies everywhere, in and outside the US. We built the server from ground up, so what exactly can the sue for? Yes it is against the SWG EULA to reverse engineer any communications between it and the server, but that is not (to my knowledge) a legal implication. All they can do is ban our accounts from their services (so what, none of you play anyway).
Q) I want to waste the developers time by trying to provide fabricated information/files simply for amusement or attention. What should I do?
A) Don't. We will ban your IP range, ban your username, ban everything related to you from our webservers, and IRC channels.
Q) I am a coder with RECENT C++ experience and Im comfortable with sending code from previous work.
A) Please PM your Application to Joker.
Q) Why dont you just have a recruit forum?
A) Over the past year, 99% of our many applicants failed to meet our request.
Q) Do you guys currently accept donations?
A) At the moment no, however we will once we reach a certain stage in development. You will see a nice easy to find link on the forums when the time comes.
Q) Can this be run on a LAN?
A) Yes. It's just like running it online, only on a private network.
Server Specific
Q) What language is the server written in?
A) C++
Q) What platform does the server run on?
A) Its platform independant. Meaning there should be little trouble in getting the server to compile on any platform.
Q) What are the system requirements to run the server?
A) Benchmarking has not been done as of yet.
Q) Will the server make use of multi core/proc setups?
A) Eventually, yes.
Q) Will there be 64 bit releases avaliable?
A) Yes, they will follow up eventually.
Q) Will there be any scripting? If so, what exactly will a script look like?
A) Yes there will be scripting, however we have not decided what engine for scripting we are going to use.
Q) What DB are you using?
A) The server will be able to interact with many DB types. Primary will be MySQL, but others such as MSSQL, SQLite, and a flat file DB are planned.
Q) Scalablity. So, are we going to be able to handle 2000 users? 5000? Is this thing modular, so I can make a cluster and run it? And eventually when benchmarking comes into play, we're going to need to know how to work it in a cluster enviroment.
A) We are building our core to be as scalable as possible. Yes we are planning on a cluster support, where you can specifiy specific zones each server in your cluster will handle. We have not done any benchmarking so a connection limit cannot be given.
Q) What tools do I need to checkout the source?
A) http://forums.swgemu.com/viewtopic.php?t=2701
Game Specific and whatever most of you bitch about thats related to SWG Jedi's.
Q) What version of SWG are you going to use?
A) We're using Pre-CU Patch 12.1. Do not ask questions about changing the publish. We will CONSIDER adding support for publishes before 12.1, no promises though.
Q) Will you support SWG Expansions?
A) We will only support the original game, and the JTL expansion. Afterwards we may try to bring in later content.
Q) How will the Jedi system work?
A) It's undecided. Don't ask either, it won't be in the emu for awhile.
Q) Will I be able to...
A) We dont know. We arent there yet dammit.
Its like asking someone whos designing a car if the seats will be leather..
Q) Can I change the rates to X999999 plz?ZZ?Z?z
A) Yes. In the DB.
Q) What commands will be avaliable to GMs.
A) Hasn't been decided but you can expect ones that fit a normal GM's needs, and a 12 year old power whore.
