Anything is "niche" compared to WOW if you are talking about subscription numbers. If you are talking about gameplay then why would it have to be a "niche" game?If they created an updated version of UO and slapped a 2 on it the game would appeal to a lot of players I would think. Especially if they had the same open ended skill system that the original UO has. Crafters, adventurers and roleplayers would flock to that sort of game.
In the 8+ years that UO has been out no other developer has matched the level of freedom that Ultima Online has given to it's players.
Edit: If you meant it was a "niche" game because of the open PvP that UO had at launch, then why not just have PvE and PvP servers just like any other MMO?
