The landscape looks like it's created from the
Terragen program, which is something I used to use a while back for planet creation... it's free too. As for the planets, planets are really easy to create in a 3D program (3DS,C4D,etc).. it's just a sphere that's textured with a cloud/weather overlay.
Still, if he can make it work then more power to him.
