I'm sure that audiences 50 years ago were saying the same thing, but about passionate kissing or women in bikinis. We've come a long way as a society with regards to what we consider indecent. We seem to have progressed to the point where we can see the occasional full frontal shot, but no erections and no pink and certainly no penetration. I say why not show it?

As far as it being a distraction... probably at first. I'm sure if you hopped into your time machine and showed Monster's Ball to an audience in the 1950's the ONLY thing they'd be able to talk about was the sex (that and a white man shagging a black woman on camera).

Today, we see it, think "Hmm. That was kinda extreme" and go on with our lives.

I contend that hardcore could be done well. The right direct could make it add to the story.

Hell, half the time I watch a regular movie I find the "love" scenes to be completely flivorous and unnecessary. It would only be worse if they were showing penetration (let alone close ups of it).
Ever seen Stealing Beauty?
