They need to forgo the flash of having a sexy looking hunk of plastic and instead shift their focus to getting neurons to link with and be sustained by inorganic mechanical components designed to pick up on action potentials maybe even a way to create artificial vesicles to work with neurotransmitters analogous to what happens in vivo.

IMHO any cybernetics research facility should be working close with biochemistry facilities trying to characterize growth factors and other substrates needed to sustain neurons. These Japanese are going about things all wrong.
