The Boondocks

So is anyone else watching this?

I've read the comic for a couple years now. When it first got added to my paper I figured it was gonna be 99% of black comedians, but in print. "White people be all like this, cuz dey nerds! Black people be all chillin'!". You know what I mean.

But it's actually pretty funny most of the time. And really rips into black society a *lot* more than white. Aaron MacGruder(comic creator) does *not* like hip hop culture it appears. And he generally manages to be funny while he's making his points.

SO, when I started seeing ads for it in my paper and on Cartoon Network I thought it was just a disaster waiting to happen. I didn't think it would translate well to a cartoon at all. The art looked cool but aside from that I had very low hopes. Fortunately I was very wrong. They've done a great job making it into a cartoon. The feeling of the comic has been kept mostly intact, but with more outlandish stuff and comedy added. It's working really well so far most of the time.

The biggest issue I've seen is that while the art is very good, the animation is pretty choppy. I don't know if that's a conscious decision to retain more of a print comic feel, or if it's just a money/time saving measure to cut down on total frames that need drawn. And Huey/Riley's voices can be a bit...grating. Regina King doing both may not have been the best choice, but it no longer annoys me.

John Witherspoon(dad from Friday) as grampa's voice was a perfect choice. And Charlie Murphy and Samual L. Jackson as the two gangstafied white guys was inspired. I was pretty surprised when I found out Uncle Ruckus was voiced by Stevie's dad from Malcolm in the Middle too.

Also, every time Riley throws a chair, an angel gets it's wings.
