In the show, it was hinted at that the main character started taking extra wives because his first wife had ovarian cancer that resulted in a hysterectomy.
And technically, there shouldn't be any more Mormon polygamists, since the Church of Mormon outlawed it in 1890, but I know it is still happening - and the way you describe India is sort of what this show's depiction looked like, with the wives scheduling who had the husband on what days of the month, etc. with the oldest wife being like 'the head of household'.
*edit* and I'd be in for the wife orgy too, hot damn. Though I couldn't help but think that every time Bill Paxton checked his phone, he was going to look at it and say, '3 Meters!?! That can't be, man, that's inside the room!!!!!" or some other line from Aliens.
