All religions have the potential to be brainwashing cults. It depends upon each individual to take what good lessons or ideals are offered by their respective religion and use it to better themselves and filter out the misinformation and subversive messages.

I'm an atheist currently, but once upon a time I was Protestant. Went to Church, went to Sunday School, studied the Bible, all that jazz. But as I grew up I realized that what I read and was taught didn't fit in with what I believed. Despite leaving the religion, however, there are still things I learned that I could apply to my daily life.

I have a Mormon friend who is a great guy. He's nice, funny, a gamer, musician, and wicked smart. It's guys like him who can take the good parts from the Mormon doctrine and ignore the crap.
