I did the exact same thing with Rifts. I played it a couple times with friends, never anything serious, but the lore really interested me. I ended up with over a dozen books, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the storyline.

It's seriously one of the best "worlds" out there that hasn't been developed into a video game, movie, series, or anything. And it's ripe for any of those, especially a MMOG.
