If we're talking range, I think Mel Gibson, Edward Norton, Kevin Spacey, Billy Bob Thornton and Al Pacino take the cake.
I completely disagree about De Niro too. If you think he only fits the tough guy/mobster role, you've never seen Taxi Driver.
