| Well I'm not going to throw away the whole genre of poetry or anything, but I can't get into it. I'm a lot more into the poem and not the delivery. Though a (regular) poem in the hands of a good reader who knows what to stress (stress, not yell) and what to say quietly can make a poem a lot better, it's still what's on the paper that matters most. A poem can be read a hundred different ways, but what's written down is always the same.
You just can't hear what the guy's saying half the time with the audience. And all the applause and shit just seems like hype and trashy. I know AMAZING poets who don't get applause like that, because it's a poetry reading, not a rap concert. I've only watched it once, but I think I heard him say some like "shit that's poetry" when talking about something in the middle of his poem. Yuck.
But yeah, I'm talking out of my ass because I don't know enough about it. This is just initial reactions kinda.. though I've been to readings where poets read kind of the same way.. Quincy Troupe for example.. just not enjoyable. |
