| Can you please develop on the Kurosawa's unpopularity in japan? I was under the impression he was very popular and that national funerals were organized for his death.
On the topic, I have seen Seven Samurai several years ago and prolly should watch it again to see what I would think of it now. I remember not being overly impressed. I liked the movie, I often found it of a great beauty, but I failed to see in it the definitive masterpiece that it is supposed to be.
When it comes to Kurosawa, I'll mention High and Low (Tengoku to jigoku [1963] kidnapping movie in a beautiful black and white), Not Yet (Madadayo [1993] the very touching tale of an aging professor, alter ego of Kurosawa) and Doomed (Ikiru aka Living and To Live [1952] Poignant story of a simple bureaucrat that start giving a meaning to his life after learning he will soon die from cancer).
Note that these 3 movies are all in contemporary settings. It may be because I saw too many samurai movies that I am not overly impressed by Kurosawa addition to the genre :P |
