I don't think you've actually heard the difference then, because it is huge.
I'm a little biased (have tinnitus in my left ear) but I'm with you here. Maybe it is just the theaters here in Vegas, but I'm starting to avoid movies except for ones I can not miss (LOTR, SW, etc.) because they are just way too loud, sometimes painfully so.
