Listen to Selwyn, he is right.

I too had the dude get owned at the gate by the elite patrol, I too had to go back and get the illusion again.

I actually failed this quest 4 times, it wasn't until my fifth attempt that I finally got it right. Basically, you can assit the dude in the town as long as you feel safe doing so but you don't really need to. Once he reaches the gates and faces the 4-man elite patrol, he could very well get killed, so wait a bit, then jump in and help finish them off. Then once he goes down the hill to the tower, do like Selwyn said and just stay the fuck out of it, WAY out of it. Get up on the hill across from the tower and stay somewhat south of the action because some elite guards will come running out of Hearthglen to come fuck your shit up, so stay away from them. At this point, the rest of the quest should pretty much play itself out. Then you just gotta talk to Daddy once he's slaughtered everyone.

But yeah, I agree with you on the vagueness of the quest. Like I said, it wasn't until my 5th try that I finally got it right.
