| I like the DVD, it's good and everything, but it sorta pisses me off how commercialized they are making the whole thing. Tolkien is probably rolling over in his grave right now.. I mean fuck, you can buy 100 dollar replicas of the swords etc.
It also bugs the hell out of me the way they handled this Special Edition DVD thing too. Smart business decision, and I still consider the cost of buying it twice well worth it, I just wish I didn't have to buy the original DVD three months before the special edition.
One thing I noticed while watching the first part of the movie last night: the special effects aren't nearly as well done as I thought they were in the theatre (I only saw it once). An example is when Bilbo and Gandalf first meet at the beginning in Bag End. They are standing near a fire, and several times Bilbo passes between the fire and Gandalf (which is lighting his robe) yet no shadow passes across him. There are several scenes where this is noticeable, when there are characters of different sizes on the same screen.
A continuity issue is when Sam and Frodo are standing in the corn field near a scarecrow, and Sam is talking about how if he takes one more step he will be the farthest from home he has been. The camera moves between a zoomed out view, and a closer one several times. It is quite easy to see that in these two different angles, Sam is standing a noticeable amount further away from the scarecrow in one.
Little niggles I guess, but stuff like that always bugs the hell out of me. Ocean's Eleven was pretty bad for continuity, and it sort of wrecked the movie for me. |
