Wanted to give a heads up for everyone in this thread. Apparently Maxim was overwhelmed (gee, really?) and decided to cancel most of the free years UNLESS you complain.

Mine was cancelled, so all I had to do was email customer support regarding my subscription and literally my email said "Hey, I was subscribed for a 12-issue membership and now it says it isn't active, can you fix this?" Today got an email back saying they fixed it for me. Just suggest everyone here checks this, especially if you hadn't received a free issue yet like me.
