Although I am still in IT, an old friend but a fairly junior guy quit the shit five years ago to go and work on a welding ticket. He'd watched Office Space too much or something and had a moment of clarity.
I shit you not, went from ~$40ish/hr contracting as a base to apprenticing for I don't know what but close to 20. A bit later and we are wondering who was the fool here. He works a ton and makes great cash and then he takes months off and spends it. Relatively little bullshit and the work is perhaps not engaging but what the hell really is anyhow?
