It's never too late to start, regardless of the whining and crying you hear from others. If you three like to play together on a regular basis, a 3 man team roaming around the pvp areas (low sec and 0.0) can tear some shit up. In theory you can be viable for pvp out of the box. On your own with no more experienced players it will take you longer to be successful often, but you can still have fun dying and losing little of value.
If pvp's not your thing you can get into production, missioning, whatever. Pvp is most fun though
