I think this is what they are trying to avoid. If they set a precident of leniant prison terms in his case, future cases may be expected to have lowered sentences as well. I think they are definitely "making an example" of him, but yeah, it's a death sentence for the guy.
I hadn't thought about the medium security prison thoughts though. He WAS in for a lot of money, and the probability that something would happen to him is fairly high.
