Wow, cops are that poorly paid in parts of the US. I have no idea what the national average is, but cops in Western Canada start out making at least 60k a year, I believe. it's one of the better jobs out there for someone without a university education, and they're extremely selective about who can make it. A guy who works for me tried to get in, and was rejected on the grounds that when asked what the most alcohol he had consumed in an evening in the past two years was 8 beers (he lied, of course, it was probably double). That was enough for them to reject him.

And that I have a problem with, due to the fact that a certain (very small, admittedly) percentage of people can be killed by tazers, whereas the likelihood of dieing from OC spray or being whacked with a baton are much, much less likely.
