There's really 2 circumstances where death grip is useful in pve: for positioning things in a more advantageous way (quickly pulling casters to you, stacking sparks on malygos etc) or for a mocking blow effect where a standard taunt wouldn't be as useful.
A good example of the latter is when Skadi in Utgarde Pinnacle whirlwinds. If you taunt him, he's fairly likely to just switch targets right after and go after a clothy. If you death grip him, he'll be forced to chase after you for 3 seconds, giving the rest of the group ample time to back away.
And if some idiot prox aggroes a bunch of mobs an ae taunt won't really make a huge difference anyway as it won't give you any appreciable threat. Better off just dropping a d&d between them and him, or on top of him if you're a bit slower. Frost specced DKs can just howling blast to grab them all, too.
