Not dissing the guy, he's done a lot. But when you decide to jump on the "suck his cock" bandwagon, feel free to retain some sort of perspective. |
I have no doubt in my mind that MMOs were going to happen with out UO but UO opened the door and was instrumental to the genre. Everquest's concept is due to MUDs but securing the funds to make the damn thing would be due to Ultima Online reaching 100,000 subs in 6 months showing that MMOs have a serious possibility for making money. Games like The Realm and Meridian came first but they also never reached a level of success that made the big name companies take notice. A few thousand subs is not enough to get companies like Sony and Microsoft to bury millions into a project. 100,000 subs? All paying $10 a month? Ok, now we are talking business.
Edit: This isn't fanboism, it isn't "sucking his cock" it is just business. Someone had to take the leap of faith that large scale MMOs wasn't a complete waste of money. You can be damn sure Sony wasn't going to be the first one to take that leap. Don't really give a fuck if you agree or not.
