| The thing is that bandwidth is not unlimited. Usage is also increasing FAR faster then new technology that can support it. Even without caps, the internet will cap itself, and everyone on it because there will not be enough bandwidth to support everyone. They simply cannot offer unlimited bandwidth to everyone forever.
The caps help keeps everyone's speeds faster, since you dont have the top teir guys hogging most it. I remember reading somewhere that like the top 3% of users use up over 50% of the total bandwidth. That is obscene. And how many of those 3% are actually using that much bandwidth for 'legit' purposes? Probably like 1 guy who REALLY likes netflix.
And you also have to think, why upgrade your entire infrastructure to please the top 3% of users? If speeds are dropping, you can either cap it for free and upset 3% of your user base, or spend billions upgrading now to please the small minority. This is a business after all.
And its funny you mention oversold. Would you be less pissed off if instead of putting in a 250GB cap, they told you their sold out of the internet in your area, and you get NOTHING?
