Hello Laptop thread! I have recently come to the decision that I need a laptop. the PC thread helped me pick out a good 1500 dollar desktop a while back, so I figured I'd poke in this thread for a bit to help find a good laptop for me.

I recently got a job where 24 of my 40 hours is sitting in a room, alone, waiting for a phone to ring. usually I get 2 calls in that period. My bosses don't care what I do, but I can't put any programs on, or liberally websurf on their machines. I figured it would be worth while to buy a laptop and an air card and do my surfing and at-work-gaming on it. Also i was thinking of getting a secondary desktop for me and my girl to play EQ2, and other computer games together on. this would sort of serve that purpose as well.

So here's my thoughts on the laptop.

1. Windows (prefer xp-pro, but I suppose i may need to succumb to vistas in the long run). no mac.

2. I don't care how much it weighs. I'm not going to be carrying it around in coffee shops, or walking anywhere. It'll go anywhere it goes in my car, and it will sit on a sturdy desk. I don't travel so no plane/bus/train issues. if it makes it cheaper to choose a heavy laptop then awesome!

3. I want one with a numberpad/full size keyboard. again, not carying about weight, I'll take as many buttons as the thing wants to give me.

4. gaming. I'm not wanting to play crysis on the max settings, but I would like to be able to play eq2 near max, bioshock, supreme commander, and more recent games at near max. I'd love this with out the thing frying in the long run. again, I don't mind if it's heavy, so good cooling in a huge case wouldn't' bother me at all.

5. the battery life doesn't bother me so much if it's low. I'm only going to use it plugged into the wall.

6. I'd like a healthy warranty on the parts, but I'm not as worried about some one maintaining my software/os...if that makes any sense. (i don't need an extended dell 'will fix your windows when you breaks it' contract).

7. I'd prefer one that doesn't ship with a ton of shitty software i have to fight to take off of it. if I could get a company to send me an empty laptop with a windows disc that would make me happy. this isn't necessary, but something I was thinking about.

I'd prefer one without a glossy screen. for some reason 3/3 of the new laptops I've seen have these super glossy screens that reflect what's behind me. why did they start using such high gloss screens?

I was told by a friend that what i wanted was a 'desktop replacement'. I haven't really settled on how much money i want to spend (I don't really know what price ranges there are). I know a lot more about desktops than laptops, but I'm not adverse to putting it together if there's an option to do so.

anywho thanks for the info.
