I really liked St. Anger. What band has the balls to answer Load and Reload with an album so fucking RAW like St. Anger? The answer is no one. They knew they'd gone soft with Load/Reload so they cranked it back up and didn't even try to smooth that shit out at all and I respect them a shitload for it. I was a HUGE fan of Megadeth, especially Rust in Peace, but ever since Youthanasia came out I haven't listened to any of their shit.
Load and Reload each had a few good songs and they aren't terrible albums but I still long for another album like And Justice for All, that was a fucking masterpiece. Best Metallica song ever? BATTERY!!!!!!!!!! That album is insanity...
St. Anger the song itself was good imo, Frantic was decent. I fukn loved Sweet Amber. All Within My Hands makes me want to beat some serious ass. That was my gym album for a long ass time. Hell it was all I listened to for a good 6 months until I finally had to just stop because all I ever wanted to do was beat the fuck out of people.
I wasn't initially a big fan of load/reload, but now I think they are ok albums. Far too commercialized and toned down for what I consider Metallica but damn near all the older metal bands were toning shit down ridiculously low when hairbands were purged. Seems like almost every band that survived changed their look and their music then just to survive the change, usually for the worse.
I like the ultra RAW Metallica shit though. It takes serious balls to release an album that is absolutely NOT going to appeal to the masses, the softcare Metallica fans, trendoids etc. St. Anger wasn't for everyone but even still it takes balls to make an album like that and go against the grain. Garage Days Inc. was similar in that respect imo. Songs like So What? sure as hell wasn't what a Load/Reload era Metallica fan was into. I prefer Metallica's Die Die My Darling over the Misfits version and I was a Misfits fan for years before Metallica covered that song. |
First of all, Battery is most assuredly NOT on And Justice. Maybe you mean Blackened, in which case, well, it's not bad.
Second, you love St.Anger but don't like Ride the Lightning? Jesus titty christ, that's about as ass-backwards as a Metallica "fan" as you can get. Delete that goddamn snare drum from the entire album and maybe you'd have something decent, maybe. Frantic wasn't bad, but that was about all the album had going for it.
