Hate to point this out. But your nice generalization is wrong. Here is where I point out the Shin Megami Tensei series (Again...)-
Go take a look at SMT 1, SMT 2, SMT 3 (Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne), Persona 3, Digital Devil Saga Part 1, Digital Devil Saga Part 2.
All of those require as much if not more preparation and understanding of what you are fighting then BG1/2.
Most of the videos on youtube don't really show the true difficulty of the fights. A large portion of them is figuring out what will work for you, and devising your own strategy. Seriously, what the crap is with people and maxing out their levels :| I should record underleveled fights.
