In terms of self-sufficient classes that can fight toe-to-toe:
clerics: healers in plate
disciples: medium armor healers that have attacks that heal themselves (ie, no spell interrupts/delays to worry about, plus you do damage
while healing). you can use a martial sword for extra evasion in addition to their 15% evasion/15% spell mitigation stance.
dread knights: tanks with lifetaps
pallies: tanks with heals
