I give the Chinese credit for not getting emo about relatively small numbers of people dying. Some non-event like the Virginia Tech massacre happens and people get all weepy-eyed with around the clock coverage. It's a means for the masses to adopt other people's emotions via the news because they're too lazy to go through the life experiences that will allow them to come up with their own. It's like, "I think I'll have some tragedy with my eggs and bacon this morning." It comes down to laziness.
