Surely, you jest. The Republicans did everything they could to stop the Civil Rights Act, along with school integration, voting rights for minorities, etc. George Wallace, a leading Republican at the time, declared "segregation today, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever" as he stood in a school house door. That era is a big part of the reason that 90% of blacks deserted the party of Lincoln and are Democrats today.
