In early 1960's the Republican party made an determined effort to use race to polarize the electorate to gain power. This effort in part was lead by George H. Bush on the coattails of Barry Goldwater. He later regretted his decision to do so and almost got thrown out of the Republican party as a result.
JFK and Lyndon Johnson fought this effort and is the key reason blacks in America are now Democrat. Therefore, the party of Lincoln changed dramatically in the early 1960's lead by Goldwater and Bush. Goldwater lost in a landslide to Johnson but built a Southern coalition which lead to the "Southern Strategy".
