Yeah but they don't explain anything about the fight. It's all assumptions we have right now, so here's mine:
My best guess is that to beat Madara, the Shodai had to first use the crystal / mokuton jutsu to get rid of kyuubi. After that, to get around Madara's mangekyou, he had to use his eternal darkness jutsu that we saw used against the Third years ago.
