| The biggest is definately going to be VG, just based on the ratio of hype to what was delivered. It's not even really worth discussing, its like when you just skip the Beatles and start talking about who's #2.
I am going to have to say that for me, beyond VG, EQ2 would be up there. When EQ2 and WoW came out around the same time, I was actually in the EQ2 camp before I had touched either one. I liked the EQ lore and deities and community, and really wanted a modernized continued version of that.
I played the open Beta of WoW and had access to a friends closed beta of EQ2 and was playing them at the same time, and it was so clear which one was superior (to me at least and thats what matters) that I just couldn't justify playing EQ2 at all. I eventually did, post Scott, and it got better in some ways (most of which were WoW inspired, which is not a bad thing to me anymore)
In a way its more WoW's fault than EQ2's. Sure EQ2 had some crazy bad ideas to start with (and I hate the graphics, "realistic" style or whatever) In a vacuum, I think I may have just played EQ2 and not thought about it, but WoW blew the doors off my expectations, and also transformed me into a modern casual MMO'er at the same time, and now my perspective is so WoW skewed for better or worse. |
